So, I was listening to samples of Robert Downey Jr's album The Futurist on Amazon to see if I liked it at all before I seriously considered buying it, and -- oh, RDJ, RDJ. Just. No. It was a nice try, really. You just... tried too hard.
Like, you can tell he has a nice enough voice and everything, but it kept cracking on most of the samples I listened to, and he was clearly straining for certain notes, and it was just so strange and awkward and stilted that I couldn't help simultaneously nervously laughing and cringing for him. Plus the weird LOLRASPY thing he was going for just sounded so strange and, again, like he was Trying Too Hard. But not hard enough, at the same time. I don't even know. And I guess it's not entirely fair for me to criticize since, a) I know virtually nothing about music, and b) I didn't even listen to the whole thing, but man oh man. Thank God I listened to the samples before impulsively buying it, that's all I can say.
Anyway, to try to forget about what I just listened to I started playing Ani Difranco's Not A Pretty Girl, and oh my God that album is so amazing and it is my new favorite CD of the moment. It's surpassed Dilate as my favorite Ani album (although Dilate is an EXTREMELY close second). I might upload it tomorrow for you guys, it's that good. And I'll throw Dilate in there too, just for the lulz.
In conclusion, RDJ, don't quit your dayjob, and Ani, keep being awesome.
